Sick Japanese Red Maple, average size: 20 ft.?
Q: Today my husband and I went to Lowe's and I got myself a Japanese Maple, and while I was placing the other's back on the shelf, we noticed one that had been pulled out of a pot, was all dried up BUT still green in the stems. I was sold this dry tree for 3 bucks (original price was 24.95) so if it lives, I got a deal huh? lol Anyway, the question is: What do I do for this tree now? Trying to use as much knowledge of roots and such as I have, I stuck it down in a jar w/ luke warm water to try to over hydrate the roots, but now that it's been in there a few hours, what's next? Are there any tale tell signs that it's a no win situation or are there signs that this little guy will make it? The trunk and the branches still have that rubber feel to them, but the leaves were like potato chips~crunch, crunch, crunch. *I did poll the leaves off, please don't tell me this was the absolute worst thing to do :/ Any advice would be awesome and greatly appreciated!!!**The tree is in plain water now w/ a small amount of root stimulator, when should I transfer it to the soil? Should I trim the roots? Should I add fertilizer? I was thinking it may be in such shock from being dry, then getting so much water that it may be too early for fertilizer?? Thanks again!!
A: Take it out of the water and plant it in the ground! At this stage, your tree can drown very easily. When it had leaves, the tree could pull the water up through the stem and release the unnecessary water through it's leaves. Not anymore, and not because of you removing the leaves but because the leaves dried up. Now the tree is sucking up all of the extra water and unable to release the extra moisture.Find the perfect place in the garden, the tag should tell you it's sun requirements, amend the soil with compost and plant the tree. Water in and walk away. Hopefully it puts on some new leaf growth in the next couple of weeks. Good luck!
