I hit an abrupt wall. Should I worry, or just do this?
Q: You guys may have read my question about the DREAM act a couple of weeks ago back, but this has nothing to do with that, so if you know anything or know of a similar situation/event, please help. Basically, my mom decided to overstay our visa when my brothers and I were little. We all grew up very differently. My older brother became a total screw-up, I'm guessing he couldn't deal with high school with all the pressures to be able to drive and work. I grew up okay, got good grades, made a lot of friends, got on prom court, graduated, etc. My younger brother also did okay, he doesn't really get good grades, but he has a lot of friends, and is a captain on the Varsity football team. Our lives aren't terrible is all I was trying to emphasize with that. Anyways, throughout my senior year, I was really stressed out because all my friends and peers were getting into school really easily. I always got asked for a social security number, alien registration card, or proof of residential status, and other stuff along those lines. Since I'm not a citizen. I obviously don't have any of those, so I wasted probably a good $250-300 dollars on sending applications in that weren't even replied to. Oh well, I ended up-somehow-getting into a school I would have picked before most of those schools that turned me down. I went there for orientation, signed up for classes, and even made friends there that I will be able to kick it with when we start. We start late in September because of our scheduling. Anyways, my mom comes in my room last night asking to talk. I knew something was wrong because I never have a moment of complacency, which I was at the time, without something going wrong. No I'm not trying to get pity, I hate pity. I'm just letting you guys know what's up. So, she comes in my room and asks me if I trust her. I tell her that I do and she takes out this letter sent from the University I will be attending from last week. I just ended up getting really pissed that she didn't tell me for a week, but was even more pissed when I found out the content of the letter. It said something along the lines of, "While you are making final adjustments to attend the University, make sure your application file is complete." And also how the University policy is to have all documentation before the fall term begins. Then it said, "if we do not receive the documents listed at the end of the letter, you will be blocked from registering for WINTER term classes." At the bottom, there was a sole item missing: Copy of resident alien card. I obviously don't have that. I'm going to a very, very blue state(leave it up for you to guess), and will be paying the out-of-state tuition, with no help from any agency/source, other than my parents. With that in mind, my mom told me all I have to do is call the admissions office and basically tell them my story and why I don't have a resident alien card, will that work? Also, if there's at a time anyone who reads this and went through a similar situation, whether it be you are also an alien who successfully got into a college/university, you know a friend who went through this, you're a lawyer who helped a student, or whatever, please tell me what your/their experience was like and if you know, how they got through all the applications. My final question is, in the letter it said blocked from registering for winter term classes, so that means I still can go in the fall right? (Incase I wuss out until then and have to goto the admission office personally.)
A: Very few unis in the US would not accept you if you're here illegally. Some would, but most would accept you regardless of your immigration status. If you don't have a social security number, you can ask the college to assign you an applicant ID - and they will. You can apply to most colleges regardless of your immigration status. But you do need to tell the college what's up. In fact, in some states, if you're a resident of that state but aren't here legally, you can talk to them, and they'll let you pay in-state tuition based on your residency. Call someone in admissions. Tell them your situation, and ask what you can do. The problem usually isn't being admitted to a uni. The problem is financial aid. As an illegal, you aren't eligible for US financial aid. But you may be eligible for institutional aid - aid given directly by the college. In fact, some unis have funds set aside for non-citizens. That's something you can ask financial aid about. You may also want to contact a good immigration lawyer, because you want to talk to them about when the appropriate time will be for you to start getting all this sorted out, so that you can perhaps stay here and work when you graduate.
