What is your opinion on the Washington DC handgun ban currently before the Supreme Court?

Q: Should the ban be removed or kept?A bit of info to think about before you answer:Since the ban was enacted in 1977, the murder rate in the District has risen high enough to make it the murder capitol of the U.S.Around the globe, here are some other stats. What Doesn't Work:Australia In 1997 they outlawed private possession of guns except in rare instances. They instituted a buyback program to remove guns from their society. The politicians promised this would make the country safer. The results:Taxpayer CostAs of August 31, 1998, the government bought a total of 643,726 guns from owners at a coast to taxpayers of $319,833,727.The collection and destruction of these weapons cost the Australian taxpayer more than $500 MillionThe results:Cost to Life & PropertyStatistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics:homicides up 3.2 percentassaults up 8.6 percentarmed robberies up 44 percent. In the state of Victoria, homicides with firearms increased a staggering 300 percent. The government's own statistics show the rate of homicides with firearms consistently decreased in Australia during the 25 years before the buyback, but increased in the 12 months following the government's buyback.Firearms used in the commission of armed robbery also increased during the same period.Crimes against women and the elderly increased sharply, as well.Australia homicides averaged less than 1.8 per 100,000 of population in the years 1910 through 1997.Since the gun ban the country has fewer guns and more crime. What Works:Israel had a problem with terrorists killing children in their schools. In 1975 they armed their teachers, aids, and volunteer parents and grandparents. These people watch over the schools and protect the children.Since 1975, when the program started, not one child has been killed in a school in Israel. NOT ONE!!!The details were borrowed from another site, but I think it gets the point across.James D Albright: I was agreeing with you 'til I saw the word "Christians". It isn't just Christians that are being affected by this ban. All citizens have the right to own firearms as long as they haven't given up that right by committing felonies etc. The ban only impacts the people who are already obeying the law. I'm not a Christian, and I've been active in defending gun rights since my discharge from the US Navy in 1989. This isn't a religious matter, it is a civil right guaranteed by our constitution. I posted it here because it does impact members of ALL religions, atheists and agnostics.

A: I like the Swiss model- everybody armed, ridiculously low crime rate.If everyone registered their firearms and were required to report them when they were lost or stolen, that would take care of part of the problem too.Frankly, I would just like to see women packing heat when they're walking around late at night.
