Preparing to get a new job when your about to be fired from your current one.?

Q: My friend was just put on probation for the next 60 days at their job in IL.The company told this person they can either quit and get paid for the next 60 days or try to improve, but if they cannot show improvement they will be terminated.This person believes no matter how hard they try they still will get fired even if they been there 3 years. My advice was to just keep working and if they do fire you, you can get unemployment benefits as long as there is no misconduct.I know IL is an at-will state and they can terminate your employment anytime. When ask what should they put down when applying for a new job I said to say that you where let go due to lay-off. People say when looking into previous employment and background checks the most a potential employer can look into is dates of employment, job title, salary, and duties. I'm not sure how true this holds up as I think it looks bad to say you were fired. I hope I gave good advice.
