Answers to Common Questions

Do I need GATE for the part-time programmes?

No, GATE is required only for full-time students getting assistantship from the Institute.

Is there a good program for first time buyers in south gate, ca.??

Be careful with some of these so called "first time buyer" programs--sometimes you end up paying more for the home than what the program provides. Find a Realtor who is going to look out for you and not just for a sale. Remember: ...

bipolar/unemployed - i need health insurance please help?

Q: i had student insurance when my first manic episode occured..it ran out later that year and now i'm screwed, no one will insure me. i have applied to many different programs and have been denied coverage.i dropped out of college and moved back home. had another manic episode before insurance ran out in aug 2008 (thank GOD, spent a month in the hospital, if i was uninsured i would have owed like 200k).now i am off all medication so at risk for another episode. cannot get a job, even a menial part-time job much less a fulltime job with benefits. i have been severely depressed for about a year now, i need so much help but can't get it anywhere.i don't think im eligible for disability, people say its hard to get for bipolar disorder..what do u say, i'm like too sad to work, so give me taxpayer money? give me a break.seriously gonna jump off the golden gate bridge if this continues, i am a burden and shame to my familybut if anyone has any suggestions, thanks.getting a BA these days means nothing, esp in this economy. i fully intend to go back to college when i am mentally stable, which at this point seems wishful thinking.

A: Most people with a bipolar disorder are highly intelligent; but, they tend to go off prescribed medications. It seems you are rational in your intellect as evidenced by the remarks about the cost of a one month hospital inpatient experience. Perhaps, you could see a qualified medical expert to prescribe an effective medication that has provided you relief in the past. I think you could apply for a "closed period" of Social Security disability benefits. My understanding is that age is a strong factor against granting permanent disability benefits. Your state Rehabilitation services office may have something to offer. I really feel that you need a short bridge of help in your life; but, please do not consider the Golden Gate and know that you are not a "burden and shame to my family." Most people have meltdowns at some point in life. I hope that regain your total function and continue your college studies. Actually, your major does not define you as much as you may think. I do hope that you return to college after you have stabilized yourself. Finally, it is tempting for many of us who experience emotional problems to ask "why me?" After years of wonder, I am not sure why. It is not "wishful thinking" that you complete college. You can still have your dreams come true. My wish for you is to regain your health.
