Answers to Common Questions

Are working files the same as personal papers?

No, personal papers are nonofficial, or private, papers relating solely to an individual's own affairs. Working files, by definition, relate to Agency business and are not personal papers.

Personal Assistant Help?

Q: I worked as a personal assistant for a Branch Manager for a bank for a long time. I'm since out of that job since I went to school, and now I'm looking to replace it with the same work. I drove him around, transported things for him, got him lunch/coffee cleaned his office, filed his papers, etc. Now that I'm looking for a similar job, I'm unsure of where to start or how to protect myself in a more formal employment situation. I was thinking of putting an ad in the paper, but I wouldn't know where to start in writing up the right documents for informal employment if someone wants to hire me outside a company payroll. What should I do?@: sdaNo, it wasn't helpful. Stop spamming ad links.

A: Hi there, I think the role you're describing there is not actually that of a Personal Assistant. We work with true Personal Assistants and some of the things you're mentioning there is more of a 'Girl Friday'. By that it means that you're there to generally help out in all areas.I would certainly recommend using the online job resources, dependent upon where you are in the World, but the more generic ones are going to be really useful for you. Given your experience I would suggest not applying for Personal Assistant roles, as it would almost certainly be deemed as an unsuitable application which is the pet hate of anyone working within Recruitment or Human Resources. Try and be specific about what you can do, and what your new employer will get for their money (salary). Remember that the global employment market is really tight now, so put together a CV and bullet point your experience, including education and include a personal profile of what you would like to do, and talk about your personality. "Committed, reliable, enthusiastic" are all words that are great to describe the kind of work you'll be doing. Support staff (PAs, Admin, etc) are all there to help a business function and you need to get your foot in the door based upon what you 'can' do. Other tips would include, be open, be realistic, and be patient.
